Shopping

in Khao Lak

Khao Lak: Shopping Bang Niang Markt in Khaolak.

Shopping in Thailand can be really fun and also quite cheap. In Khao Lak, however, you will look in vain for a large air-conditioned shopping center.

At the turnoff to the beach in Ban Bang Niang, you will find many small shops selling all kinds of souvenirs and clothing. You can also buy groceries, drinks and cosmetics here. Most shops are open until at least 9 p.m.

High-quality goods can be found in Khao Lak Center in the shops on both sides of the street near the To Zleep Hotel.

In Khao Lak Center the main street forms a 2km long shopping street. Inside there are some shopping bazaars, mostly with Indian sellers, who always sell the same shirts and souvenirs. In these shops there is unfortunately a lack of the otherwise dominating Thai friendliness and the prices are often excessive.

Markets

"The Landmark" Market is located right near the famous "Bang Niang" Market. You can get to "The Landmark" by walking south from the traffic light in Bang Niang, toward the mountain, past 5 Star Motor Bike Rental. Then turn right and you're there.

There is a particularly large selection of food in the Nang Thong Supermarket at the traffic lights in the Khao Lak Center and in the Mother Marche north of Bang Niang.

In Khuek Khak, about 3 km north of Bang Niang at the bus station, there is a large fresh produce market (talad sod), which is open daily from morning to noon. This market is mostly visited by Thais and foreigners living here.

In Bang Niang, a scenic open market is held near the traffic light every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday  and Saturday afternoon. It mainly sells clothing and souvenirs, but also all products of daily use: fruit, vegetables, flowers, household items... However, the stalls with open meat and seafood on ice seem a bit strange to tourists.

The food stalls at the entrance to the market are particularly popular: many people eat their way through the many types of skewers, from fried pieces of chicken with sticky rice to fried insects. Even doner kebabs and handmade ice cream are available here.

In the meantime, this local market has become a true tourist destination, which has expanded significantly in recent years, and where several small bars have also established themselves. The vendors are friendly and cheerful, and you can haggle a bit at the souvenir and clothing stalls.
