Vier Monate in Australien

Four months in Australia

Anfang August 1992 flogen wir von Bali nach Darwin im äußersten Norden von Australien. Wir wollten wieder ein VW-Wohnmobil kaufen, aber diesen Wunsch gaben wir schnell auf: Alle VW-Busse hatten den Kontinent offensichtlich schon mehrfach umrundet, immer mit anderen Globetrottern, und sie waren in sehr schlechtem Zustand. So kauften wir für A$5800 (damals ca. DM 6000) einen vollständig eingerichteten Toyota HiAce mit langem Radstand und hohem Dach - wir bereuten den Kauf nie. In August 1992 we flew from Bali to Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territories of Australia. In a newspaper advertisement we found with the help of a Swiss friend a good Toyota HiAce camper with a high roof for A$5800 (about US$3500). Despite our reluctance to buy a Japanese vehicle we never regretted the choice: spare parts are extremely cheap and readily available, every workshop seems to know how to fix this popular vehicle, its resale value is very good (we sold it in Sydney for A$5650 to other travelers).

Wir hatten in Bangkok ein Visum für 3 Monate beantragt, aber schon nach wenigen Wochen wußten wir, dass wir dieses herrliche Land noch öfter besuchen würden. So reduzierten wir die geplante Route erheblich: von Darwin ins Rote Zentrum nach Alice Springs, dann nach Cairns an die Küste von Queensland und langsam nach Süden bis Sydney, immer abwechselnd im Bergland und an der Küste entlang. Als Richard auch noch an Gelbsucht (Hepatitis A) erkrankte, verlangsamten wir unser Reisetempo erheblich und verlängerten das Visum auf vier Monate.

We had applied for a 3-month-visa only. But after a few weeks we knew that we would visit this beautiful country many more times. So we reduced our itinerary considerably: from Darwin into the Center to Alice Springs, then to Cairns at the coast of Queensland, and slowly southward switching back and forth between the coast and the mountains. When Richard caught Hepatitis A (a souvenir from Indonesia?), we reduced our traveling speed even more and extended the visa for another month.

In ganz Australien konnten wir meist in herrlicher Natur campieren: in National Parks, auf einsamen Campingplätzen der Forstbehörde oder gelegentlich in freier Natur. Es überraschte uns sehr, dass wir überall von gar nicht scheuen Tieren umgeben waren: Känguruhs, Wallabys (kleinere Känguruhs), nachtaktive Opossums, der Kookaburra (ein großer Eisvogel), ein zutraulicher Helmkasuar, und sogar ein kleiner Koala. There we really enjoyed the close encounter with so many animals: Kangaroos, various kinds of Wallabies, Possums, the omnipresent Kookaburra bird, a delightful Cassowary, and even a little Koala.

Zehn Wochen in Neuseeland

Ten weeks in New Zealand

Nach unseren guten Erfahrungen mit einem gekauften Wohnmobil in Australien, suchten wir auch in Auckland nach einem preiswerten Womo. Aber Anfang Dezember war der Markt so gut wie leergefegt. Wir hatten großes Glück, einen alten Bedford mit Wohnkabine für NZ$ 5600 (damals DM 4600) zu bekommen. Nach einer großen und zwei kleineren Reparaturen konnten wir ihn im Februar mit riesigem Glück für denselben Preis verkaufen. After our good experiences with buying a camper in Australia, we looked for a camper in Auckland, too. But in the first week of December, the beginning of the summer season, there were hardly any reliable campers available. We were really lucky to find an old Bedford camper on a second hand market. It cost NZ$ 5600 (about US$ 2500). In February, at the end of the season, we were extremely lucky to sell it for the same price to a local couple.

Da wir leider mit dem Wetter gar kein Glück hatten, es regnete sechs Wochen, waren wir über das geräumige Wohnmobil besonders froh.

Unfortunately the weather was very rainy for six weeks. So we were very happy about this really spacious camper.

Auch in Neuseeland hatten wir viele schöne Begegnungen mit Tieren, z.B. Albatrosse, Gelbaugen-Pinguine, Garnets.

In New Zealand, too, we had many contacts with animals we had never seen before, e.g. Albatross, Yellow-eyed Penguins, Garnets.

Auf der Südinsel erlebten wir unsere ersten Seehunde. Vor allem bei den Jungen verbrachten wir viele Stunden.

On the South Island we had our first encounters with seals. We spent many hours watching the playful babies.

Im Gegensatz zu Australien erlebten wir jedoch auch die Menschen als sehr nett, interessiert und hilfsbereit. So verbrachten wir mehrere Tage auf den Rinder- und Rotwildfarmen von Servas-Gastgebern. Different from Australia we met many friendly and helpful people who were really interested in the world and in our travels. We spent a few joyful days on cow and deer farms of Servas hosts.

Als Gesamteindruck hatten wir jedoch das Gefühl, dass die Natur von Neuseeland längst nicht so phantastisch ist, wie sie immer dargestellt wird. Viele Attraktionen lassen sich überdies nur mit prall gefülltem Geldbeutel erleben. Vier bis sechs Wochen reichen für eine Neuseelandreise gut aus. Bei zehn Wochen kann durchaus eine gewisse Langeweile auftreten. After traveling for ten weeks all over the two main islands we felt that the nature is by far not as scenic and unspoiled as many advertisements try to make us believe.
In addition many attractions can be experienced only with very costly guided tours.
Four to six weeks in New Zealand are really enough for most travelers.
